Test drive went well, made it back home. Battery light coming on so got back and swapped alternator. Gonna drive again now that it's dark and cooler out
Swapped alternator last night and drive as indicated above. Was good, part throttle up to redline feeling strong then stopped for gas. Back to the house went WOT in 2nd and the battery light came back on and i ran on battery for about a mile or so. Coming back into the neighborhood it seemed to be charging again but weak, and revving results in lower voltage.
At the house it would idle at 14v with all accessories (minus fan) on. Fan on and held 12.6/12.8, revving results instant battery light and voltage drops to B+. Fan off, idles at 14.25. Revs result in battery light and voltage dropping towards B+. This was one of a few I had locally rebuilt a few years back (tag indicated 2019) and the one that went into Silver1 last time started spewing metal shards out of the case when I got to work one day and ended up in a tow home.
Ford tensioner looks and feels strong, new belt installed Friday after battery light first started flickering (old alternator), no belt slipping felt/heard. Car has BIG 3 with 0/1GA, all connections tight. Fuses good. Battery decent shape and passes load testing.
Guess I'm swapping alternators again this morning (have more on shelf ) although one may be that last locally rebuilt alternator im gonna have to check....
Rockauto has some BBB Alternators on closeout for $41 at the moment, they seem to be a USA based rebuilder. So I bought 3. Get some while you can at that price if you need an alternator

after testing, got a different code P1132. P1132 - Lack of HO2S-11 Switch, Sensor Indicates Rich. P1130 - Lack of HO2S-11 Switch, Fuel Trim at Limit The HEGO Sensor is monitored for switching. The test fails when the HO2S fails to switch due to circuit or fuel at or exceeding a calibrated limit.

Had some short to ground issues with the SVTF IAC wires on the ZX2 cooil pack housing. literally had a bandaid stopping it from rubbing to get me home from work without intermittent 3k-5k idle speed lmao. this was thursday, so i trimmed the coil pack bracket back, moved the resistor and all is well. could have swapped to a ZX2 IAC but went the hard way because....well its me thats why. SVT IAC is now able to be unplugged and reconnected without having to remove the coil pack. that will be gone eventually for COP anyhow.
so then yesterday i made a little 2.75 intake and played with advancing the intake cam some more and she rips now. last nights test drive resulted in a quick pull on a scion TC that was making alot of noise lol
yay, i was able to remove a stuck lifter out of a cylinder head i need to use.
one of the shims broke while the engine was running. One part of the shim got stuck in the lifter and jammed it up leaving the valve stuck. No damage to valve because non interference. Other piece of shim got onto another lifter and between cam breaking that shim as well. A piece from one of those ended up on the intake side and broke another shim and scored the surrounding area as well as chip off a part of it. Thankfully none of this damage destroyed the head. Can still use after cleaning up the scoring. I have a few lifters so i just need to measure them out and find matching ones to use when i put it back together. Good thing too because this cylinder head is low mileage (about 15k) and still real clean
ps, that lifter was stuck af. i had to weld a nut and bolt to it so i can have something to grab onto to pull it out. I just grabbed it with pliers and used a small hammer to hit the pliers upward pulling the lifter out without issue

Shims, so 98 head? Do you replace the 98 followers with the later 1 piece ones?
I've got a few of the solid later ones id snag from zetec focuses in the junkyard when id see them

from what i can tell they can be interchanged. in this instance i am going to replace with 98 style again because i have a bad head from another car and now have access to 16 of them.
i will be taking apart a newer style head which is also ded so will likely put into a 98 style and see how it goes so i have first hand experience
yeah i always thought they were interchangeable although never done so myself. i started collecting them secretly hoping that one day id get an intake cam and would need various sizes on hand to make everything happy lol

Actually I find it kinda funny you posted about the Ford Racing IM....
I haven't told anyone but I did make the smallest purchase to start gathering parts for an IM build. Been contemplating a lot of things now that I've got an AC TIG lol
Been struggling to not purchase another $500 in things to move forward with this idea.
Been looking around to find 1.75in aluminum velocity stacks has been a bit challenging but I think I found a source
Are we really that limited by the IM design, especially if one is FI already? I'd think porting the head would yield more benefit. No?
Depends on what youre after honestly. I just want to be different and can stick aluminum together now so....its kinda been on my mind lol. and its REALLY been on my mind since running the SVTF manifold in Silver1. part throttle torque and response gains FEEL HUGE. WOT yes but not as much as part throttle feels to me though.
Been going down the rabbit hole with equations and figuring things regarding runner sizing and length, same with plenum sizing and velocity stacks. As mentioned above I found a deal for some seemingly appropriately sized things for this project. will be a long road just to do it and find out how it affects things assuming its ever made.
ive even bene looking for existing manifolds that might be similar port spacing to cut up and make something custom.
More to the point of your question there is definitely power to be gained, but WHERE? Have you ever seen the testing that Richard Holdener did with the Zetec in the "High-Performance Ford Focus Builder's Handbook"? I can get some pics if nobody has seen this before. Hes tested the FRIM intake, ported Focus Central intake, an adjustable runner intake, the SVTF intake...probably more im forgetting. MOST loose power at lower RPM but make great gains above.
So as with everything its a give and take game but like i said to begin with it depends on what youre after

i don't even remember what a n/a stock zx2 feels like (other than slow lol)... i've seen some of his videos, even the one where they had a turbo zetec. if it's not bother, i'd like to see what gains he got on those n/a cars.

I'm out of town but thankfully had the intake manifold chapter saved to MEGA. Check this out.

I just drove mine.
But I drove a buddy up to the auction place where he bought a Silver 2000 ZX2 MTX with 106k miles for $300, power locks/windows. Seems to have been a tow behind vehicle of some sort as it has the tow bar up front sticking out of the bumper. I put an alternator in it for him (*one of those BBB Reman alts from rockauto for $40 bucks*) and he bought a new battery and she fired right up. Its got some body damage on passenger side above the bumper and in front of the rear tail light and the driver front bumper has a dent in the plastic, he pushed that out about 60% on the spot but we'll try and hit it with a heat gun and see how much the rest comes out. Driver window regulator needs replaced. Power steering is NFG and after firing it up an ABS light came on but he's driving it down to my place now so I can check it over real good and let him know what all else it will need.

We got his Z down to my place, the ABS light turned off on the drive. I checked the PS reservoir and it was almost empty, filled up and power steering returned. Not leaking that I could see so unsure where that went. I pressure washed underhood and outside, outside is quite dirty and still needs much more cleaning, inside is pretty clean, windows need cleaning though and could use a vacuuming.
I'm gonna do my normal replacing all the rotting rubber vacuum lines with good silicone lines (I like siliconeintakes.com boost/vacuum hoses) found it needs a rubber stopper replaced on the cruise control brake switch. It's got a weird issue with the driver glass catching on the window trim when closing the door with the window is all the way up (can push it in and close it though). It's also got a weird click from the column when turning, sounded like the turn signal cancel cam but it clicks every resolution, feels good otherwise.
HELLUVA car for $300.
Messing around with me he's already wanting to spend some money on mods for it
