I have an o3 zx2 I was gonna replace the timing belt and idlers and put a freshly rebuilt head on.my question is the head is off a 98 can I still use the tensioner and idlers for the o3 switch are smaller in diameter? I already have everything ready and went to take the top end off and realized the difference.

If you use a 98 head you'll need to use the pre 99.5 timing belt setup. That means you'll need the different pulley up top and you'll need to add the lower idler near the crank as well.

This made me curious so I looked at rockauto to see the part numbers...I compared gates for all 3 ,the tensioner, upper idler, and lower idler and the tensioner and lower idler had the same part number but the upper idler was different 98-tensinor(gates) T43003 / lower idler(gates) T42034 / And upper idler(gates) T42035. 03-tensinor(gates) T43003 / idler lower T42034 / and upper idler T42036 witch makes me confused now, witch one would have the right listing the 1998 or the 2003 on rockauto or what are the correct part#'s

The tensioner is the same across the board, post 99.5 timing setup shouldn't have the lower pulley. My Zs have 99.5+ timing setups and I've always just bought the appropriate kit from gates (via rockauto). The gates kit comes with the tensioner, upper pulley and lower pulley, for the 99.5+ you just don't use the lower pulley. I've got a bunch of them from over the years. I was always under the impression that the upper pulley was a different diameter...maybe it's not. This is what i would do. pre 99.5 = www.rockauto.com/en/moreinfo.php?pk=295595&cc=1420467 TCK294/2522940 post 99.5 = www.rockauto.com/en/moreinfo.php?pk=613493&cc=1420489 TCK294A/2522941

The upper pulley is a different diameter and mounts in a different location, the lower idler is not used. Please note that using the 98 head you'll also need the 98 backing plate with the correct mounting hole location for the upper idler.
You should have bought a 99.5+ rebuilt head instead.

I always heard that the 98 used the lower idler, if they don't then whats the damn thing for? lol
good call on the backing plate, i had no idea the location was different too always just thought it was the size.
I'm glad my cars are 99.5+

I basically got it for free. I went to an all you can carry or drag event at a local pic-apart and that was the only zx2 they had there unfortunately, but with all the stuff I drug out of there it was wort it.

If you got the backing plate with it then hell yeah. sounds like you can just use all the 98 stuff and will then need to use a 98 style timing belt kit
