Has anyone ever heard of a timing belt tensioner bolt breaking while driving? My zx2 got a new timing belt kit about 40k mi ago and I lost the timing belt tensioner bolt on the way to work last week. I plan to investigate, and my initial hunch is a poorly torqued bolt. Is this something that happens randomly, or is there something I need to watch out for that causes it?

Happened to my wifes Z on the highway a few years back. definitely not a common occurrence though.
If it snapped off in the head and is protruding and you can get a turbo socket on there you should be able to get it out. On her car it seemed to be overtorqued based on the pattern of it snapping but it did come right out for me thankfully. My buddy totally sold me on the turbo sockets and he saved the day with his set to get this broken bolt out of her car and back on the road. I bought a set myself which ended up saving me again on the Acura where there was a broken stud in the head for the rear cat.

Unfortunately nothing is sticking out to get a socket onto in my case. I am gonna try a pick, then an easy out (if I can get it to fit). Worst case is I pull the engine :,(

I had this happen with my 2002, it was caused by the VCT locking up and over tensioning the belt, broke 5 of them in two weeks until I figured it out...
We (My dad and I) used a punch and hammer to back it out enough to turn the rest of the bolt by hand on the first one, the rest were done by a shop. worse yet at the time the VCT was not available yet as a replacement part!

If you cant get it out in the car, I think it would probably be quicker and easier to just pull the head alone. Slap a new head gasket on there after you get the bolt out of the head and you'll be good to go for a while.
As to Dave and the VCT issue snapping the tensioner - WOW I knew you had VCT issues back when but didn't realize that was happening! Thankfully my wife's car just needed a tensioner and was back on the road and still is with 380k on the dash. The only VCT solenoid on a ZX2 I've ever replaced was Silver2 and its the lowest mileage ZX2 I own lol
