I recently found out that coilovers are stiffer than lowering springs. I wondered for a while, and one of the reps from D2Racing told me that coils will always be stiffer. I suppose that is why they sell the inserts that go into the McPherson strut. You can retain your spring and adjust your damping however you like.
Here is my question for you all: Are there any coilovers for the ZX2 that allow for a similar stiffness to lowering springs with preload and damping adjustment?

Can't speak for other coilovers as I've never had them, but yeah generally folks go coilovers for more performance suspension setups. The Feal 441+ I have in the turbo car feel amazing. Feal will work with you to fine tune the shock rates and spring rates for your expected uses.
They're expensive, but ultimate customizability when you're paying that much and working with a company that's literally building the suspension for you.
I went with MX3 coilovers with road race valving and Swift springs @ 7k/6k, opposite of what you're asking for though, I wanted a tight and sturdy suspension for pushing the turbo car hard. I've been extremely happy and haven't even played around with the valving yet.
If you're serious about a good suspension setup shoot them a call or an email and see what they say. You can reference me (Erik, TheEvilZX2) if you'd like.

They don't look to be too much more expensive than the D2 system ($1500+?). I want the no-crosstalk adjustments. From what I understand from working with motorcycle suspension you can go a ways up the stiffness scale and tune for bumps with rebound damping. Maybe a stiffer spring rate won't be as bad as the lowering springs since I will have the adjustment capability. I might shoot them an email and see what they can do for me.
Would you say your setup is uncomfortable on the street? I don't mind if it is a little stiff, but I don't want to get whiplash from tiny bumps anymore. I like the performance feel of the lowering springs, but I want a little more cush ride.
Any idea what the spring rate is for stock zx2 springs and the S/R lowering springs? In curious to see how they compare to the Feals.

The turbo car feels amazing on the street. I did tell them that I didn't care how it handled bumps on the street and I wanted performance focused suspension. I chose "road race" valving vs the "balance comfort and performance" option and went with the 441+ option to get the Swift springs. To get extra fancy 2 way adjustable shocks (no crosstalk) you'd have to opt for the 442 package which really bumps the price up. It still feels great over small bumps but larger bumps (at high speeds) it makes a little noise but I probably shouldn't be driving it like that on those surfaces lol This link has some good info on spring rates. www.clubprotege.com/forum/forum/1st-generation-mazda-protege-familia-1990-1994/suspension-brakes-bg-chassis/37248-spring-rates-for-323Somewhere online there was a chart on an MX3 or 323/protege forum with spring rates. I thought it was on here but we just have the interchangeability parts listed. If I can find it I'll make a new post
