Having an issue with my power steering, it sounds like the pump is about ready to fall apart. Sounds easy enough, just change the pump. Well thats where it gets interesting. I first swapped it with a used pump I had in my stores and the sound persisted. I assumed that the pump was good but it was from a friend so I didn't actually know. So I changed it again for a used one from one of my other cars that I knew was good. Same sound. I have confirmed with each pump that the sound is coming from there with my stethoscope type thing, fluid looks nasty and even after changing it a couple times it goes back to the burnt color. Before I go and buy a new pump is there any experience on what else could be up? It steers fine, no leaks, fluid is cycling good (watching from the tank) so I cant see it being a line of the rack but maybe it is and all Im hearing is cavitation. Currently it is loud enough to not be able to hear a conversation in outside of the car. Thanks for any suggestions. It has been this way for over a year, with the house and farm the zx2 doesnt get much love at the moment.

I would suspect the noise is one of the lines sucking in air, introducing air into the system even with a new pump. I would also probably flush your power steering fluid, it might be all the junk in the fluid the rack itself causing fluid to turn dark after it cycles a bit.

Well part of the issue got sorted this weekend. Was driving a couple hours up to my parents and the tensioner pully let loose, had someone able to bring me tools and a new pully (tensioner itself seems ok, no one had one anyway just the pully). Apparently that was the growling portion of my noise. Well while I was at it I took a peak at my timing belt and found its holding on for dear life. Could not find a whole kit anywhere, finally found a pully kit someone was able to drive and pick up (2 hours away from me) I had to use the partially shredded belt but it held to get me home so new belt is on the way. While I had the serpentine off I was running the car a little to set the timing tension and my loud scream noise was still coming and going. Like I said it sounds like cavitation but obviously not PS now. VCT dying maybe? Ill have to play with it later. What a pain of a weekend.

Whoops, I usually suggest checking if the noise is still present with serp belt off. I would suspect it being a timing belt/pulley noise if it's that far gone. Otherwise you should be able to get a more precise location with the stethoscope without the belt in the way.... maybe wait and see if it's still present after you change out the timing. If I recall correctly, overtensioning the timing can cause belt wear/noise? Maybe dareall knows.

Can you get a video with the sound?
With the serp belt off the only things spinning to make any noise (besides engine internals) are timing belt pulleys. Is there a piece of belt stuck somewhere?
Idk about VCT failure (never experienced it) so unsure if that might be it. But the cavitation sound is what's weird to me, oil pump would be the only other pump spinning at that time....
