You can use stock ECU with tuning, no problem. I would not advise boosting the engine without a tuning solution.
I'd suggest purchasing from Lasota Racing for a SCT PRP purchase if you are going to be learning and tuning yourself go ahead and buy the tuning manual to follow along with. You could also find a dyno shop local to you that can do SCT and they can tune for you, but you'll always be at the mercy of someone else for tuning any time you want to change or test something.
As for megasquirt, this can be done as simply or as complex as you'd like. If you're not familiar with what megasquirt can do I'd suggest to start reading the megasquirt manuals to figure this out. If you're not able to follow along in the manuals I'd highly suggest going the SCT route.
SCT PRP really is the best option for quick and cheap and easy. If anyone is scared off by the PRP and X4 cost to get tuning the factory computer they should definitely stay away from megasquirt or any other platform that will require custom wiring and tuning

Thank you for the info Ive been trying to find out for close to a year if I could tune the stock ecu this does make my happy I was looking at the SCT X4 for tuning it seems to be the most recommended tuner for ford car and trucks and it helps because I’m doing a turbo on a tight budget and mega squirt is a little outside of that budget because I’m still stock bottom end so I’m not looking for peak power to start also will I need larger injectors for 5-8 psi

yeah if youre on a budget id look for some lightning 42# injectors, easily tunable with SCT and pretty easy to come across, overhead for room to grow also. im going megasquirt (been saying this a few years now lol) but it is alot to do and iom not just going straight megasquirt, im doing/testing all kinds of unnecessary things and trying to run megasquirt alongside the factory computer and slowly hand off duties to megasquirt....im getting there one step at a time. definitely not advised unless you like wiring and basically redoing everything

Would the 42# injectors from fswerks be the same or equivalent

Where do I find a base tune I will actually be going the stand alone ecu route that uses megasquirt maps and tuner studio so I was just wondering if there are any base or start up tunes I can use as a starting point

Just kinda answered this on the discord channel.
Not sure there are any base maps for the ZX2 specifically. Might be easier to find a Zetec focus base map to use their values to get started
