Hello ZX2 community
So I am new owner of a 2002 ZX2 160,000 on the clock. Overall good shape car yet unfortunately the car was disassembled for a head gasket repair (gasket blown between cylinders 2 and 3) never to be reassembled by the last owner. Lucky I was able to intercept on the way to the scrap yard. I’ve got it going back together currently have some questions regarding timing of the exhaust cam gear, So the vct solenoid and cam gear were removed from cam any info on reinstalling the vct and gear to the exhaust cam?
Also is there an o ring available for mounting the vct to the head? I see them included if you buy a new vct but not stand alone for sale
Thank U

hello and welcome to the site!
VCT solenoid is installed by removing the exhaust cam and it slips into the head with the cam, the single hole is aligned at the 12 o clock position after install. the cam gear has a tab on it that goes in the VCT solenoid hole you just set at 12
i looked and dont see any o rings for the vct solenoid available, do you have the old ones? if not i can see if i can find some in the shop and get you some measurements. id replace with some good orings of the appropriate size like viton or something

Thank you for the info. Also thanks for looking. I don’t have a old o ring. I do have a complete engine that I don’t really want to take apart But may end up doing so to snag some parts.

Ok so I found my spare vct solenoid, it's actually all one piece and has these little locating "dowels" on the back of it. I did get some measurements though. Just over 2mil, and this one looks flat. Maybe from age and heat? Idk OD measuring in over 15mm, sorry camera turned on me. ID measuring 10.81mm but I think this is the least crucial measurement. The ID of the largest port is only around 8mm. Idk what happened to the camera here lol sorry If it was me, I'd find an oring of appropriate OD and thickness, hold em in place with some grease and install carefully. An oring rated for the heat and oil should do nicely I'd imagine.

they sell zetec cam lock tools but ive found they have alot of slop for my liking. i bought some thicker material from mcmaster-carr years ago that i use, sorry i dont recall the measurements. basically you just need a sturdy flat something that fits nicely into the slot on the end of the cams and sits on the head
dont torque the cam bolts down using your cam lock tool, use wrenches on the hex near the cam gear to torque the cam bolts

Thank you. I’m not sure what I’m doing incorrectly yet I’m unable it use the cam lock tool (flat metal piece). Does it need to have cut outs? Or does it sit even along the top of the head where the valve cover would seal? Also this is the tooling im using 3-Piece Camshaft Alignment Tool Set Compatible with Ford 2.0L 2.3L 2.5L Engines Timing Belt Tool Kit Compatible with 1994-2012 Ford Contour Cougar Edge Escape Explorer Focus Fusion Mystique and More a.co/d/7FR5JyI

It should slot into the cams and sit flat along the head. Only thing I can think of is the cams are 180deg out, the slots are off center and the bar will only fit in when the cams are oriented correctly. The Zetec is a non interference engine (unless you've got high lift cams and high compression pistons and I think the head needs to be decked too for it to become interference) so no need to worry damaging anything spinning the cams with the timing belt disconnected

you only need flat bar for timing

Thanks for the info!
So unfortunately there was some parts that came up missing from the car one of which was the electric radiator fan assembly. Are these fans pretty dependable should I get a junk yard fan? Or would it be better off buying new? I understand new can be always better yet want to keep the project cost low till I get it running. If these fans have a high failure rate I will bite the bullet.
Thoughts?

Thanks to dareall for the pic, I didnt have one on hand
For me fans have a pretty good track record. I've only replaced one fan across a handful of zx2s over the last at least 10 years (I've had my turbo car going on 20 now)...its usually the relay on the CCRM that shits out and not the fan. Ive got my daily on a switch, turbo car too but its got aftermarket fans due to size constraints.
I wonder if folks in warmer climates have different experiences?
