I understand that the ZX2 2.0 engine has mechanical lifters. I adjust valves in my single cylinder dirtbikes once every couple years or whenever they start making noise. My 4 cylinder Honda gets checked every 8k. My Harley Panamerica has hydraulic lifters. I have never heard anyone reference messing with valve adjustments on the zx2 engine. At 248k, loose valves might be contributing to noise I hear from my car's engine. The book says you have to remove the cams to replace them, so I'm not sure the job is worth it when I'm getting 35 mpg already, but I was curious. Are the valves known to need adjustment? Has anyone else adjusted them and seen an appreciable difference? Have you ever seen a zx2 with extremely tight valves?

to be completely honest, ive never even checked the valve clearance on any of my zetec engines. the wifes car has over 350k and my daily is going to hit 250k before the end of the week.
i might check them in the turbo car (180K-ish miles), eventually but not on my priority list by any means
anyone else??

It is a shim design, adjusting it isn't like adjusting a honda valvetrain, it would be similar to a miata or 1.8 EGT. I can't remember if it is a shim over bucket or shim under bucket design though. Actually, it's been a long time since I looked into this, it might be different thickness buckets as opposed to shims. I wasn't even going to bother with it until I was potentially going to put a cam in the car. These cars are known to have a noisey valvetrain, I don't recall ever reading about anyone checking, let alone actually adjusting the lash on a zetec. Someone may have though. Edit: A quick search did yield a result from a zetec focus: www.focusfanatics.com/threads/zetec-valve-adjustment.299311/

No mileage in that article, but it looks like it wasn't very far out of spec. My noise is more likely a tired piston just trying to break free. I'm curious to check anyways, though. If I have to replace the timing belt again I'll check the clearances for fun. I have another engine I could get into, but I would rather save it as a drop in replacement.

I've shimmed the lifters in my 2001 ZX2 Black. The top surface of the lifter has a counterbore that accepts factory shims from Ford. My Haynes manual provided the stock tolerance. Measure each and note how far out of tolerance and add or subtract the shim thickness that brings it into tolerance.

1998 style lifters are two piece with a shim. after that theyre all solid, no shims. have to swap buckets

Man, 1998 sure is an odd-ball. Transmission gearing differences, valvetrain differences, wiring differences, heck even the way the rear seat mounts is different.

yeah we call them PRE 99.5 and POST 99.5 as ford changed some things mid model year 1999. theres a few other little differences as well like the additional timing belt idler down near the crank on pre 98.5s.
some cars (like my turbo car) are model year 2000 (build date of 9/99) and came from the factory with a 98 thermostat housing :-)

Funny, wonder if Ford had a massive surplus of the old style tstat housings. I know for 04-08 F-150s it seems to be luck of the draw if you have a forged crank or not (though both 5.4 3Vs have done timing jobs on have had forged cranks including my own).
I do wish the fuel cutoff switch was by the driver's foot on my 98, though I've never had an issue with it.
