Been running my little VJ11 for 4 years now. Great little guy for mid-range, but chokes up at the top. I've put down close to 200 whp on a mustang dyno and over 200 tq. That was with some boost leak (my dumb-ass didn't test before sending her off to the dyno). I've since added a manual boost controller and upped it up by a few psi. She's ripping, but I really want her to carry it over 6k rpm. I'm on stock internals still, so wondering if upgrading to a larger turbo would expedite my internals demise? Any suggestions?

id get that engine or another one built first before swapping the turbo. why swap turbos and potentially have to change some things when you dont have much overhead for the bottom end.
it sounds like youve already made up your mind on wanting a bigger turbo, i think the real question now is what turbo is going to give you the flow where you want it in the rpm range.

I agree with Evil. I would get a stronger supported bottom end to handle a bigger turbo. Otherwise, your just risking it at that point. I'm sure for 200whp, that's a quick gigh 13 second car if it hooks up. Do you have a built transmission to handle the power?

i'm on lsd and a recent trans refresh. have more spare trans parts than i care about lol + a beefier case if we got that high (obviously that doesn't help with gears hearing off...). i trawled protege/escort forums yesterday and might get a VJ17 out of a ford thunderbird and mate up with my hot side so i don't have to fuck with recreating the dp and new mani. should flow better than vj11. already found a guy that might sell me a fresh one for $250 (was hoping for a lot less, but it is what it is, there's nothing online...).

Id jump on that then, price seems pretty good if its a functional turbo and will require no to minimal modifications to your setup. All you'll really be doing is moving the powerband upward, I wouldnt push much more HP on the stock bottom end unless you want to test your luck/limits I'm pretty much in the same boat, maxed out stock bottom end till I get megasquirt sorted out then swap in built motor

well, when it does blow up that's a good reason to start building her up lol guy said that turbo is no good and looking for another one he has. Ford Thunderbird '87-88 is actually VC32, not VJ17 like i thought. VJ17 came on 323 mazda rally cars (not available in US), but probably have same compressor specs.

your call, im just not keen on blowing stuff up if it doesnt have to who knows what else might get taken out when whatever goes, goes. plus, if you build another motor youll have the current for a spare (like me if youve got a few zx2s on the road) or spare parts, or another motor to build for a built spare....idk gives you more options

Mine is a 50 trim to4e compressor housing and a t3 turbine in a .63 a/r housing. Currently sitting at around 8.5psi. Data says that's about 220ish at the wheels, should be 250ish crank...im not taking it any farther on the 180k+ mile stock engine

Well, the new sucker is in and lemme tell ya. I was only able to take her out for a few minute spin and some 1st/2nd gear rips tonight. I don't like hauling ass in town at night lol Didn't want to take her to the hwy either, maybe tomorrow after a fresh oil change. Turned the boost down and it was hitting 10-11 psi in 1st gear all the way to redline. i didn't max 2nd out, as that would be around 60 mph in town, but hit about 50 without the boost dropping off. Even tho i have uniden r1, didn't want to chance anything. Tho it was somewhat of a bitch to swap the chra, the couple minutes of joy i received was well worth is so far. Buttdyno approved! A few pics of before/after to show the cold side difference (yuge). I did have a little scare on the "new" turbo leaking oil thru the middle section when i first started it, but seemed to have cleared up during my quick ripping session. It did come out of a car with 150k miles on it, after all, but no play that I could feel. Fingers crossed. before: after:

Ah jealous of the boosted guys but not jealous of the timing tick bomb it can be. I'm trying to get gitter to supercharge his z. His will be the ulimate build with a built lower end, ford racing head, supercharged, etc.

gitter? where his ass at? haven't seen that mofo in a good minute! meh on the supercharger. i mean, it'll look dope, but if he's building the whole shebang, he's gotta go turbo. just my 0.02.
is he the guy that posted the SC setup on FB tzx2 group?

Sweet! You swapped chra and compressor, but same turbine housing? Where does this one spool compared to before? Sure is nice holding boost to redline

yup, that was the beauty of this one, just swaps into the turbine housing. i think it spools right around where the old one did, maybe just a tad slower. i'll test it some more and report.

changed the oil and took her on the highway session. gawd damn she rips! third gear went all the way to 90mph (in what felt like an instant). I mean i could've taken her there with the other turbo, but it didn't feel like it was going anywhere after 80. holy shit. it was a colder day today, around 50F when i was driving, and the boost went a little over where i wanted it (13 psi or a bit more). afr was also starting to hit 12s, so it definitely needs to be backed down some and retuned in the near future. i assume it would be in the more normal range when it's warmer out, but i don't want to chance it and melt the pistons. butt dyno says yuuge gains.

Whats up fuckers. How dare you talk about me behind my back! Looking good minimo! Jason said you were on here so I thought I'd pop in. I could probably start my build if I could spend the time getting all my data from the wayback machine. But I am fucking lazy, thats for real. Great to see you're back at it. Looks good!

was finally able to score a custom 2.5" o2 housing. pics for comparison. slapped it on last night and ripped on her a bit today. hard to tell anything on the butt dyno yet. still need to take her our the hwy to get some higher gear/rpm feel, but it rips all the way to the redline. Looks great! Any oil problems?
